Rainbow Wools - Tips and Tricks for Dying

We will be regularly updating this page - images to come soon - so keep an eye out!

Even vs Uneven
  • If you are trying to achieve an even colour with your yarn dying, soak the yarn completely in warm water before adding it to the full dyepot.
  • The more water you have, the more room the dye has to move around.
  • gently move the yarn around every 5 minutes or so while it is coming to the boil and cooking.
  • If you want uneven colour, do not presoak the yarn first, use less water and don't stir too often (some stirring is necessary to prevent burning.

Dye not taking up?
  • Check you water ph (you can get ph test kits from your local pet store). If your water is more alkaline you will need to add more acid.
  • Are you using too much dye? Wool does reach a point where it won't absorb any more dye. Check the directions on the pack - they will give the recipe for the strongest solution.
